Or, if you need to, please press CTRL+F The Purpose of the LISD social studies program is development of appropriate knowledge, skills, and beliefs necessary for responsible, participatory citizenship. The social studies courses required for graduation in LISD are United States History, World Geography, World History, and Economics with an emphasis on the Free Enterprise System and United States Government. Advanced Placement courses are offered in United States History, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Comparative Government and Politics, and European History which provide opportunities for students to earn college credit. Pre-advanced Placement courses prepare the students for the rigors and critical thinking needed in the Advanced Placement courses. Note: College credit may be granted by a university based upon Advanced Placement examination scores. All students enrolled in an Advanced Placement course are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement exam for that course. Fees are approximately $46.00 per test and will be at the student's expense. Courses Avaiable5700 United States History - 1 Credit GPA Level: 2 This course is a study of the people, events, and issues that have shaped political, economic, and social institutions of the United States form the period of Reconstruction to the present. Student must also take the Texas mandated United States History End Of Course Exam. 5705 United States History Advanced Placement - 1 Credit GPA Level: 1 This accelerated course is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement United States History exam. In-depth analysis of documents and writings form the pre-colonial period to the present develop students' research analytical, and writing skills. Students must also register for Special Topics in Social Studies: Historical Analysis of the United States. Students must also take the Texas mandated United States History End of Course exam at the completion of the 27 week course. 5710 Special Topics in Social Studies: Historical Analysis of the United States - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 1 In preparation for the Advanced Placement Exam, This course develops critical thinking and writing skills focusing on events of the 20th century. Students must also register for United Sates History Advanced Placement. 5715 World Geography - 1 Credit GPA Level: 2 This course is a study of major areas of the world, the process that shape the earth and the relationship between people and their environments. 5720 World Geography Pre-Advanced Placement - 1 Credit GPA Level: 1 This course is an integrated study of regions of the world focusing on the relationships among people, places and environments, physical and human systems, and the uses of geography. Critical thinking skills prepare students for the United States History and European History Advanced Placement course. 5725 World History Studies - 1 Credit GPA Level: 1 This course is a study of the development of civilizations and cultures from the earliest societies to the contemporary world with a focus on the historical perspective of major world events and movements. 5730 World History Studies Pre-Advanced Placement - 1 Credit GPA Level: 1 This course is an in-depth study of the world from primitive man to the present focusing on major political, social, economic and artistic movements throughout history. Extensive reading and composition prepare the student for the rigors of the United States History Advanced Placement and European History Advanced Placement courses. 5735 United States Government - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 2 This course is a study of the United States Constitution, the three branches of the federal government, the national political system, and state and local government systems. 5740 United States Government and Politics Advanced Placement - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 1 An average of 85 or better in previous Pre-Advanced Placement social studies courses. This accelerated course is designed to prepare students for the Government Advanced Placement examination. Through an analysis of historic documents, these courses provide in-depth study of the foundations of the U.S. political system, its institutions, and the construction of governments. This course fulfills the graduation requirement for U.S. Government. 5745 Comparative Government and politics Advanced Placement - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 1 This college-level course is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam in Comparative Governments and Politics which focuses on the political systems of Great Britain, France, Russia, China and either India, Mexico, or Nigeria. Sources of public authority and political change form the basis of comparison. This is an elective course. 5750 Economics (Free Enterprise and Its Benefits) - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 2 This course is a study of the basic principles of the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. The students gain competencies in practical, real-world economic situations. 5755 Macroeconomics Advanced Placement - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 1 This challenging course is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement examination. The students gain a thorough understanding of basic economic principles with emphasis on the study of national income and price determination, economic performance measures and internal economics. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking skills through understanding the applications and analysis of fundamental economic concepts. This course fulfills the graduation requirement for Economics. 5760 Microeconomics Advanced Placement - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 1 This college-level course, designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam, focuses on the individual decision makers within the larger economic system. The nature and function of both product and factor markets and the role of government in promoting greater efficiency and equity form the basis of the course, This is an elective course. 5765 European History Advanced Placement - 1 Credit GPA Level: 1 Placement social studies courses This college-level course covers political, cultural, intellectual, economic, and social concepts though primary and secondary sources. The course requires extensive reading and writing in preparation for the Advanced Placement test. This is an elective course. 5770 Psychology - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 2 This course is a study of individual an group behavior focusing on the knowledge, methods, and theories which are used by psychologists. 5775 Sociology - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 2 This course is a systematic study of individuals, groups, and social institutions. The course focuses on the individual and his relationship to the society in which he lives. 5780 Special Topics In Social Studies: Street Law - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 2 Focusing on a practical understanding of law and the legal system students develop participatory skills, practice in resolving disputes, and a greater sense of justice, tolerance, and fairness. 5785 Special Topics In Social Studies: The World Since World War II - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 2 Focusing on Germany and the former Soviet Union in the second half of the 20th century this course explores political, social, and economic changes that have impacted the U.S. and the world. 5790 Special Topics In Social Studies: The United States Since World Was II - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 2 This course is a study of the contributions of various ethnic groups and individuals who are often neglected if a traditional U.S. History course. 5795 Psychology Advanced Placement - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 1 This accelerated course is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement Exam. The student is introduced to the discipline of psychology by emphasizing the history of psychology as a science, the different theoretical approaches that underlie explanations of behavior, and the contemporary research methods used by psychologists. State credit cannot be earned in both psychology and psychology Advanced Placement. 6260 World History Studies-S - 1 Credit GPA Level: 3 This course is a modified social studies curriculum and is taught in the regular world history or resource class room. 6265 World Geography-S - 1 Credit GPA Level: 3 This course is a modified social studies curriculum and is taught in a the regular world geography or resource classroom. 6270 United States History-S - 1 Credit GPA Level: 3 This is a modified social studies curriculum and is taught in regular United States History or in the resource classroom. 6275 United States Government-S - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 3 This course is a modified social studies curriculum and is taught in the regular United States Government or resource class room. 6280 Economics-S - 1/2 Credit GPA Level: 3 This course is a modified social studies curriculum; this class is taught in the regular economics classroom or in the resource room.
