Foriegn Languages

Students pursuing an advanced program transcript must successfully complete two years in the same foreign language. It is recommended that students pursuing foreign language studies have a strong English grammar background and complete three credits in the same foreign language.

Note: College credit may be granted by a university based upon Advanced Placement examination scores. All students enrolled in an Advanced Placement course are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement exam for that course. The maximum cost per exam is $46.00. Each student will pay $5.00/test. Financial aid is available locally and through state.

4500 Spanish I - 1 Credit

Grade 9 - 12

Prerequisite: Average of 80 in English is recommended

Spanish I is designed to teach the sound system, the pattern of intonation and basic speech patterns. Fundamentals of reading and writing are taught along with basic structures and essential conversational skills. The cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries are also stressed. This course includes demanding vocabulary and language/grammar study.

4505 Spanish II - 1 Credit

Grade 9 - 12

Prerequisite: Spanish I, and/or Invitation based on set criteria

Students in Spanish II have the opportunity to expand basic audio-lingual skills, to increase vocabulary, to master more difficult language structures, and to further develop oral proficiency.

4510 Spanish III - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Spanish II, and/ or 80 in Spanish II is recommended, and/or Invitation based on set criteria

Spanish III students continue to develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Study of the structure of the language is enriched by target-language discussions of current events, selected poems, short stories, and other readings.

4515 Spanish III Pre Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Spanish III students continue to develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Study of the structure of the language is enriched by target-language discussions of current events, selected poems, short stories, and other readings. This course includes a strand of study to help prepare students for the Advanced Placement testing opportunity.

4520 Spanish IV Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Spanish III

85 in Spanish III is recommendation, and/or Invitation based on set criteria The curriculum further refines skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Advanced grammar studies and analysis of selected works of literature and current events are included in this course to prepare students to take the Spanish Advanced Placement Language Exam.

4525 Spanish V Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Grade 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Spanish IV 85 in Spanish IV is recommended Teacher recommendation, and/or invitation based on set criteria

Spanish V further develops all skill previously acquired. Advanced grammar studies and literary selections will be presented to prepare students to take the Spanish Advanced Placement Literature Exam.

4530 Spanish VI Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Grade 10 - 12

Prerequisite: Spanish IV 85 in Spanish IV is recommended Teacher recommendation and/or invitation based on set criteria

Students will continue to work on both oral and written fluency. Students will improve their ability to analyze literary works and to study authors and recurring themes.

4535 Spanish VII Advanced Studies - 1 Credit

Students will continue to work on both advanced oral and written fluency. They will farther improve literary analysis skills and knowledge of major works in Spanish.

4540 Spanish I For Spanish Speakers - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Familiarity with the Spanish Language as demonstrated on a questionnaire or prior background

This Spanish class is designed for students who have had exposure to oral and/or written Spanish. Students will further develop their oral and written skills in such a way as to take advantage of their prior experience with the language. The cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries will also be stressed.

4545 French I - 1 Credit

French I provides basic instruction in speaking, reading, listening, and writing the French language with primary emphasis on speaking and listening skills.

4550 French II - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: French I and/or invitation based on set criteria

Students in French II have the opportunity to address more advanced skills with continued emphasis on listening and speaking. The study of French culture is pursued.

4555 French III Pre-Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Continued development of the skills acquired in French II is the objective of this course. In addition, French literature and more in-depth cultural studies are taught. This course includes a strand of study to help prepare students for the Advanced Placement testing opportunity.

4560 French IV Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: French III 85 in French III is recommended Teacher recommendation and/or invitation based on set criteria.

French IV provides a further refinement of skills in listening, speaking, and writing of the French language. French history, culture and literature are stressed. The main focus of the course is to provide sufficient practice to allow students to pass the Advanced Placement exam. Participation in the Advanced Placement examination for college credit for this course is encouraged.

4565 French V Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: French IV 85 in French IV is recommended Teacher recommendation and/or invitation based on set criteria.

The French V curriculum provides an individualized approach to French literature and culture. The main focus of the course is to provide sufficient practice to allow students to pass the Advanced Placement French Literature exam. Participation in the Advanced Placement examination for college credit for this course is encouraged.

4570 French VI Advanced Studies - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Average of 80 in English recommended

The skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the German language are taught. Emphasized also is the study of German costumes, holidays, history, and daily life. Conversational skills and listening skills are stressed.

4580 German II - 1 Credit

Grade 9 - 12
Prerequisite: German I and/or invitation

The skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the German language are practiced as a continual of German I. Also included is the study of German customs, history, and daily life. Conversational and listening skills are stressed.

4585 German III Pre-Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

The most basic listening, speaking, reading, writing, culture, and language skills studied will be learned in this introductory Latin course.

4605 Latin II - 1 Credit

Grade 9 - 12
Prerequisite: Latin I

The basic listening, speaking, reading, writing, culture, and language skills will be more advanced than in Latin I.

4610 Latin III Pre-Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Latin II 85 in Latin II is recommended

Students will continue to refine the speaking, listening, reading, writing, culture, and language skills. This course is for students who have reached a high level of proficiency during the first two courses. This course includes a strand of study to help prepare students for the Advanced Placement testing opportunity.

4615 Latin IV Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Latin III 85 in Latin III recommended

Students will continue to refine speaking, listening, reading, writing, culture, and language skills. This course is for students who have reached a high level of proficiency during previous years of study. Only authentic Latin will be read. It is assumed that students have a full understanding of the Latin grammar system. Students are encouraged to participate in the Advanced Placement Examination for college credit.

4620 Latin V Advanced Placement - 1 Credit

Grade 11 - 12
Prerequisite: Latin IV 85 in Latin IV is recommended

Students will continue to refine speaking, listening, reading, writing, culture, and language skills in Latin V. This course is for students who have reached a high level of proficiency during previous years of study. Only authentic Latin will be read. It is assumed that students have a full understanding of understanding of the Latin grammar system. Participation in the Advanced Placement Examination for college credit is encouraged.
