Courses AvaiableBiology - 1 credit Prerequisite: None This is an introductory course in biology and is divided into two parts - cellular biology and living systems. Students must also take the Texas E-O-C exam. Biology Pre-Advanced Placement: 1 credit Prerequisite: 90 in 8th grade science OR 85 in Pre-AP 8th grade science - Teacher recommendation. This introductory course is much more challenging, rigorous, and in-depth than Biology I. A strand of study is included to help prepare students to take Advanced Placement Biology. Students must take the Texas E-O-C exam. Integrated Chemistry and Physics (IPC) - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Prerequisites: Biology and Algebra or Algebra 1-B. This is an introductory course in the study of the basic principles of chemistry and elementary physics. Some universities may not recognize this course for science credit. Credit will not be given if credit in Chemistry or Physics has already been awarded. Chemistry - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Biology or Biology Pre-AP. This basic course covers the composition of substances and the changes they undergo. Emphasis is on the scientific method. To be successful in this class, the student needs to have a working knowledge of Algebra and Geometry. Chemistry Pre-Advanced Placement - 1 Credit Prerequisite: 90 in Biology or IPC or 85 in Biology Pre-AP; 85 in Algebra I or 90 in Algebra 1-B; Teacher recommendation. This first year chemistry is much more challenging, rigorous and in-depth than Chemistry. A strand of study is included to help prepare students to take Advanced Placement Chemistry. Chemistry R&D - 1 Credit Prerequisite: 80 in Algebra II Pre-Advanced Placement or 85 in Algebra II; 80 in Chemistry Pre-Advanced Placement or 85 in Chemistry; Teacher recommendation. This course provides a second year of study in chemistry and is a preparation class for college chemistry. Emphasis is on applying the scientific method to everyday experiences. This is not an Advanced Placement Course and does not prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam. Chemistry Advanced Placement - 1 1/2 Credits (27 weeks) Prerequisite: 85 in Algebra II Pre-Advanced Placement or 90 in Algebra II; 85 in Chemistry Pre-Advanced Placement or 90 in Chemistry; Teacher recommendation. This course is designed to prepare students to take the AP test in this topic. This is a first-year college level course. Students are encouraged to take the exam. Physics - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Biology or Biology Pre-AP. Physics is an introductory study in the relationship of matter and energy. Emphasis is on application and scientific method. To be successful in this class the student needs a good working knowledge of Algebra and Geometry. Physics Pre-Advanced Placement - 1 Credit Prerequisite: 85 in Algebra II or 80 in Algebra II Pre-AP; teacher recommendation. This introductory physics course is much more challenging, rigorous and in-depth than physics. A strand of study is included to help students prepare to take Advanced Placement Physics. Physics Advanced Placement - 1 to 1/2 Credits This course is designed to prepare students to take the AP test in this topic. This is a first-year college level course. Students are encouraged to take the exam. Biology Advanced Placement - 1 1/2 Credit This course is designed to prepare students to take the AP test in this topic. This is a first-year college level course. Students are encouraged to take the exam. Environmental Systems - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Algebra and Biology (or Biology Pre-AP). This course addresses the fragile interrelationship of man and his surroundings. Emphasis is placed on ways to improve that coexistence. Topics for study include biotic/abiotic habitats, ecosystems, biomes resources/environmental systems interactions, sources/flow of energy in the environment, and changes in the environment. Aquatics Science - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Algebra and Biology (or Biology Pre-AP). This course offers an understanding and awareness of fresh and saltwater systems. Topics of study include: aquatic ecosystems and their habitats; cycles within aquatic environments and adaptations of aquatic organisms to change; watersheds; and geological/fluid dynamic phenomena and their effects. Geology, Oceanography and Meteorology - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Algebra and Biology (or Biology Pre-AP). Geology, Meteorology, and Oceanography offers an opportunity to investigate such areas as: characteristics, conditions, and formation/history of the Earth; plate tectonics; physical studies of rocks; processes/products of weathering; natural energy resources; watersheds; characteristics of oceans and the atmosphere; and the role of energy in weather and climate. Astronomy - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Geometry and Biology (or Biology Pre-AP). Astronomy provides an overview of the technology in a modern and historical approach to space study. Topics of study include: information about the universe, characteristics/cycles of stars; exploration of the universe; role of the Sun in our solar system; planets; and the orientation /placement of the Earth. Anatomy and Physiology - 1 Credit Prerequisite: Algebra and Biology (or Biology Pre-AP). Basic genetics, embryology, and functions of key human physical systems are studied in this course. |
