Counseling and Guidance

In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins--

The Counseling Office at Lewisville High School exists for one purpose-- to help students, parents, and teachers. It is important that students become aware of services available so that they can take advantage of all the services offered by the Counseling Office. Counselors are available to assist and advise each student about personal issues, academic and/or career discussions, course selections, college choices, scholarship applications, and student orientation information.

The Counseling Office will provide assistance so that:

• Each student will achieve a strong self-concept and healthy self-respect.
• Each student will build healthy interpersonal relationships and behave responsibly in school, in the family, and in the community.
• Each student will develop the motivation to learn and accept the responsibility for his/her own learning.
• Each student will gain a better understanding of one's self and how to integrate into the world of work.
• Each student will earn a high school diploma.
• Each student will be able to make wise decisions regarding career choices and appropriate educational options.

Role and Responsibility of Counselors

The responsibility of the counselors is to focus on individual student needs and to guide the student in making appropriate decisions. The counselors will provide the following services to all students when appropriate:

• Assistance in decision making.
• Assistance in functioning productively within the school and the family.
• Assistance in clarifying personal goals.
• Assistance to the student in making appropriate behavioral changes.
• Register in appropriate classes.
• Prepare student recommendations.
• Assist with post-high school planning.
• Assist in college and financial aid applications.
• Assist with career planning.
• Review academic records.
• Review academic progress.
• Interpret test data.
• Referral of the student with special needs to appropriate program agencies.

Students wishing to see their counselors MUST fill out the "Request to See Counselor" forms available in Counseling Office. After completing the form, the student is to leave it with a counseling secretary and wait to be called by his/her counselor. Students will not be able to see their counselors without making a request; teachers have been instructed NOT to send students to be the counseling Office, unless a call slip has come for the student.

Program Changes

Students and parents are requested to exercise care in selecting a student's program so that a minimum of changes will be required. The office knows that changes may need to be made; however, necessary changes must be made in a timely fashion.

• Program changes necessary because of improper placement and/or program errors will be made within first three (3) days of each quarter.
• Students who find valid need to change their programs, by dropping one class and adding another, will be allowed to do so on a space available basis up to and including the 3rd day of each quarter.
• A.P. schedules may not be changed unless there is a credit issue. Be careful when signing up for these courses.

Counselor Assignments: Students are assigned to counselors alphabetically by the student's last name. These assignments are posted in the main office and in the counseling suite behind the main office.
